Bread-makers blame AMC raid for fall in sale
Ahmedabad: Bread manufacturers of the city have complained to the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) that their counter sales dropped by 40% on Saturday after the civic body took 22 samples for testing for potassium bromate content. Every day, close to 500 bakeries in the city manufacture one lakh bread packets; 22,000 pao bhajis; and 25,000 pizza packs.
In a representation before the AMC’s health department, the bread-makers have claimed that they had maintained all standards. The AMC’s food sample tests have also showed that the presence of potassium bromate was 25 to 30 parts per million in the bread loaves. This is within permitted limits.
There were, however, five bread packets in the 22 samples that did not contain information such as the ingredients used and health value, as mandated under the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI).
